Project Description

This was the biggest, most exciting, most stressful print project I've ever tackled. And I was the client! For almost 20 years my house was a super boring off-white with white trim. It was that (lack of) color when we bought it and because we were doing most renovations ourselves, it was just too intimidating a project, so we kept putting it off. When it was finally time we hired a painter (otherwise it might never have happened!) I knew I wanted to do something bold but I was nervous about it. Would the neighbors hate us? Would we look ridiculous? When I showed my initial mockups to our painter he was against this palette because it was too dark, too bright and just too much. He suggested a pastel, but we aren't pastel people. Realizing he wasn't changing our minds, he said I needed to choose 7 colors for a true painted lady. I had only chosen 5 colors. My husband created a line drawing of our house which included every bit of trim that existed on the exterior. I collected paint chips from 3 different paint brands and created multiple mockups and finally it all came together.

For about a month our house was covered in scaffolding and netting and I was getting excited and very nervous. It was very bright and a huge change that took getting used to, it felt like Disneyland. But as soon as the scaffolding came down, the house started getting lots of attention. Local mural tours would stop and admire it, the tour guide said, "This one is straight out of Alice in Wonderland." Parents would take photos of kids in front of it. Sometimes I hear, "Cool! A purple house!" So many photos were being taken of our house, our neighbor with the orange house was jealous. And now I just wonder when I'll see my house on social media or someone's blog. :)
